Chickpea (Cicer arietinum) is a major food crop and an important source of protein. Despite its importance, improving chickpea varieties has been challenging due to their complex genetics, lengthy breeding time, and limited research tools.
SUN proteins reside on the inner membrane of the plant cell nucleus and help regulate nuclear shape and position, as well as how genes are switched on and off during development and stress. Although SUN proteins have been linked to interactions with both beneficial and pathogenic microbes, their role in plant immune responses remains unclear.
