Aspirin-Conjugated Cholic Acid Derivative Combats Polymicrobial Infections and Inflammation

In this study we reported the design and evaluation of an aspirin conjugated cholic acid-derivative which act as a potent antimicrobial agent. The engineered amphiphile exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens by disrupting bacterial membranes through interactions with lipoteichoic acid and lipopolysaccharide. It demonstrates bactericidal effects that induces reactive oxygen species generation, lead the lysis of cells and able to eradicate mono- and polymicrobial biofilms.

Decoding Ataxin-3 Phase Behavior in Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3

Ataxin-3 is implicated in Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) or spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3), the most dominantly inherited form of ataxia. While normal individuals have polyQ stretch of ~ 20-40 glutamine residues, MJD-affected individuals have polyQ lengths up to 80 glutamine residues, caused by aberrant CAG repetition in the ATXN3 gene.
